Testing Gear

Recently I've decided that I need a wide angle lens. There are so very many opinions on the internet about which lens is best, and for every "This is the best lens EVAH!" there is a "Focus was off. Do. Not. Buy." So I've taken to trying out lenses first. This Friday I have the Tokina lens coming. It will be my first non-nikon try, but I'm excited about the prospect.

If you're looking at buying any new gear, I suggest a tester from Borrowlenses.com. I've rented from them before and renting is easy and fast. Click the link below and check them out. Today.

Do I need Photoshop?

Recently I've had a lot of friends that want to dip into the photography world, and after the inevitable "what camera do you have" discussion, and after they buy a fancy camera comes the Photoshop  question. Do they need it, how much is it, do I use it, how do you use it... on and on. My response usually includes the phrase, "you don't need Photoshop to take great photos," which is true. I started taking photos long before I ever got my hands on Photoshop, long before I had a fancy camera. However, the answer to that question is, "yes, I use Photoshop .. for somethings." More than Photoshop, I use Lightroom. It's capabilities are all anyone would ever need at half the cost of Photoshop. The straight to the point answer from me would be - if you want to do extensive retouching, HDR processing, and compositing then spend the money for Photoshop. If you want to take beautiful pictures and have the ability to adjust things like exposure, saturation, and have the option for simple effects like split toning, then buy Lightroom and enjoy!

All that being said, if you're shooting jpeg and just want to be able to crop or apply a few effects try something free or cheap like Picasa, Gimp, iPhoto, or the web based Photoshop Express. Don't get bogged down by what equipment or software you need. Just go out and shoot!

Quote of the Day

“No matter how much crap you gotta plow through to stay alive as a photographer, no matter how many bad assignments, bad days, bad clients, snotty subjects, obnoxious handlers, wigged-out art directors, technical disasters, failures of the mind, body, and will, all the shouldas, couldas, and wouldas that befuddle our brains and creep into our dreams, always remember to make room to shoot what you love. It’s the only way to keep your heart beating as a photographer.” - Joe McNally

Portrait of a Lady

I'm very grateful to my friend Andrea, who allowed me to photograph her this weekend. We made a make-shift studio in my favorite corner of her house. These are all natural light (I'd kill for the light that comes shining through her front windows!) with a little fill using diy white reflectors. With a subject like this one... how can you take a bad photo?! Thank you, Andrea.

Video Project

I've always been in awe of people that can do video really well. Those that can get their message acrossed in just a few short minutes, and those who are able to cut to a piece of music that helps convey that message. Recently I have begun playing with video and I love it! I'm working to try and incorporate video into more of my projects and assignments. The video below is a project I recently did for Simon Wong Engineering. I am so proud of it, I have to share it! Looking at it after the fact, as with most things, there are obvious things I'd like to go back and change, but for the most part I like it and had a great time doing it. I hope you enjoy!

Nordstrom/SD Opera Fashion Event

Tonight I was assigned by GB Magazine to cover the Nordstrom Spring 2013 Fashion Preview held at the Wayland Center at Del Mar Fairground benefiting the San Diego Opera. Amazing clothes. Beautiful People. What more could you ask for? Full event photos will be up in the new "Event" tab after they are published in the magazine. For now, enjoy a few shots of the venue.

Waiting To Get In

Graffiti/Mural Adventure

Inspired by a few murals in the the neighborhood I took my camera out for a drive today. These were found in South Park, North Park, East Village, and Chicano Park in San Diego.

Puppy Portraits

I'm dogsitting for my friend Beth, and aside from puppy cuddles and cuteness it affords me the chance to photograph. For the most part Reggie is putting up with my incessant camera lens, though I'm sure I've spotted him rolling his eyes at me.

Crosby Park

Spent a hour down at Crosby Park yesterday, watching the sunset over the Coronado Bridge. Was cold (colder than SD should be!) but beautiful at the same time.

Thanksgiving 2012

What a wonderful Thanksgiving day. Delicious food? Check. Excellent company? Check.

My thanks to my wonderful friend Andrea for hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year along with her family and our other good friend Beth. We all contributed food and boy oh boy was there a lot of food! It was all delicious. I'm stuffed, and probably will be for several days to come.

I hope that all of you had as good a day as we did.

Happy Thanksgiving.

San Francisco Oct 2012

I took a quick trip up to SF to visit my lovely friends last weekend. Time in SF seems to fly by so fast. I never seem to have time to see all those people, visit all the places, or photograph nearly enough of the beautiful, gritty, lively city that I called home for so long. Here are a just few pictures that do absolutely no justice to the golden city of San Francisco.

Balboa Park

A few of my assignments for GB Magazine were in Balboa Park this week and I was happy to get the opportunity to stroll around the park a little  bit after the events. It really is a beautiful place, plopped right down in the middle of San Diego.

The Main Stage

A few months ago I volunteered to take photos at the San Diego Pride Festival. Luckily I was in the right place to be asked to photograph the main stage on the first night. I'm finally getting around to processing and posting them. Here are some of those photos.

A Detour to San Juan Capistrano

A few weekends ago I made an overnight trip up to Los Angeles to meet up with my friend Theresa and her lovely family. On the way home I decided to take a detour to the Mission at San Juan Capistrano. The Mission was founded more than two hundred years ago, and is now open to tourist. The history of this place is amazing. It was a beautiful way to spend an hour and I encourage you to visit or just read more about it.

Class Assignment

I'm taking courses to receive a certificate in Digital and Social Media at SDSU and my first class is a photography class! Our assignment is to create a photo essay about something... so we made a salad. Okay it's probably the easiest option out there, but I do love food photography and it was a fun experiment in lighting and depth of field. Here are a few shots from the many we took yesterday.

(Also - Thanks to my lovely friend Andrea for agreeing to be photographed for 2 hours for this!)
